a reporter from the paper learned from comrade ye chumei’s relatives and friends that marshal ye jianying’s eldest daughter, ms. ye chumei, died in beijing on september 18, 2024 at the age of 96 due to illness.

public information shows that ye chumei, ye jianying's eldest daughter, was born in hong kong in 1928. from her birth to 1937, she and ye jianying were separated and had no chance to meet.

in 1945, 17-year-old ye chumei was taken to yan'an. after only one month of reuniting with ye jianying, she was sent to the icy and snowy northeast to be tempered and became a soldier of the northeast democratic alliance army. in 1948, ye chumei was sent to the soviet union by the party organization to study.

after returning to china, ye chumei served as deputy director of the machine tool bureau of the former ministry of machinery industry. ye chumei's husband is comrade zou jiahua, former vice chairman of the standing committee of the national people's congress and former vice premier of the state council.

according to a previous report by china discipline inspection and supervision news, ye jianying wrote a poem titled "pull up your energy and embark on your long journey" to his daughter ye chumei in a letter on december 6, 1946. at that time, ye chumei was studying at the moscow institute of finance and economics, while ye jianying served as the cpc representative of the military mediation executive department.

in january 1946, the kuomintang and the communist party formally signed an armistice agreement after negotiations. subsequently, the military mediation executive department composed of the kuomintang, the communist party and the united states was established to mediate the military conflicts between the kuomintang and the communist party and supervise the implementation of the armistice agreement by both parties. however, in june, chiang kai-shek brazenly tore up the armistice agreement and launched a full-scale civil war. in february of the following year, ye jianying led the last batch of communist party personnel from the peking military mediation executive department back to yan'an, and the military mediation executive department was declared closed.

although it was only half a year since the full-scale outbreak of the civil war, and we were still in the strategic defensive stage, ye jianying enthusiastically expressed his confidence in our victory and his vision for a better future in the letter. he was happy that the next generation could participate in "this earth-shaking struggle" and hoped that they could make their own contributions.

on may 27, 1949, ye jianying wrote to ye chumei again with enthusiasm: "daughter! let the fathers dig the foundation of the new democracy flat, and let you, the next generation, build our motherland into a free, happy, civilized, progressive, solemn and magnificent world. you cannot evade this responsibility, you must fulfill the responsibility of your generation. therefore, while you are still in the period of study, you should work wholeheartedly to build our completely new china!"
