according to a report by ria novosti in moscow on september 20, russian foreign minister lavrov said that russia and china do not need to form a military alliance like nato because the two countries are constantly carrying out fruitful bilateral military cooperation.
"we are often asked when we will establish a military alliance," lavrov said in an interview with sky news arabic. "we do not need to do that. we regularly hold joint military exercises, including naval, army and air force exercises. our militaries cooperate with each other, get along well, enhance their interoperability, and train together. all this is done without the establishment of a military alliance like nato. there is no doubt that we will continue our strategic cooperation in all areas."
lavrov pointed out that now that the united states is trying to "drag" the nato structure into the asia-pacific region and has created aukus and other "quad and trilateral groups," china and russia have common interests in ensuring their own security.
lavrov stressed: "the open purpose of all these actions is to contain china and russia. we should remain vigilant. this will bring us closer together. we are natural partners."
