according to the japan broadcasting association (nhk), east japan railway company said that at about 8 am local time on the 19th, a tohoku shinkansen train departed from akita to tokyo. when the train was traveling between furukawa station and sendai station in miyagi prefecture at a speed of 315 kilometers per hour, the connection between the two carriages suddenly broke, causing the two carriages to separate.

east japan railway company also said that after the accident, both carriages automatically activated the emergency brake system and stopped, and the two carriages were finally about 300 meters apart. the train did not derail, and none of the more than 300 passengers on the train were injured. after preliminary inspection, no abnormalities were found on the surface of the interface where the two carriages were connected.
