the kunshi railway is a remnant of the yunnan-burma railway built during the anti-japanese war (1937-1945). construction began in december 1938 and it has a history of more than 80 years. when construction was suspended in 1942, 80% of the railway had been completed, and traffic had opened between kunming north station and anning station. due to the invasion of the japanese army, the tracks between anning and shizui were removed. at the time of liberation, only the section between kunming north station and shizui station was open to traffic, so it was renamed the kunshi railway, which is part of the kunming meter-gauge hub under the jurisdiction of the kunming railway bureau.
the meter-gauge mayuan station, where the event took place, is an important station for the reopening of the "kunshi line" in the first phase of the "yunnan province centennial meter-gauge tourism development and operation project". with the advancement of the "yunnan province centennial meter-gauge tourism development and operation project", the meter-gauge mayuan station is once again crowded with people, and this weathered railway has regained new vitality.
"the centennial meter-gauge project is a strategic cooperation agreement for the 'yunnan centennial meter-gauge tourism development and operation project' jointly signed by yunnan investment group, china railway kunming bureau group and crrc urban transportation in june 2022. the three parties jointly protect and develop yunnan's meter-gauge railway resources. among them, the first phase is to reopen the 12-kilometer section of the meter-gauge 'kunshi line'." chen weiqiao, head of the project's investment promotion department, introduced that the centennial meter-gauge project aims to promote the productization of meter-gauge tourism resources and solve the problem of insufficient supply of experiential tourism in kunming by reopening the meter-gauge railway.
"at present, the block section from mayuan to xiaocaiyuan, which was promoted in advance, is under construction. the block adopts the 'meter-gauge + business format + greenway' approach to break the closed meter-gauge section in the urban area and create a complex urban linear landscape integrating humanities, ecology, and tourism. it strives to become an important growth point for the high-quality leapfrog development of kunming's tourism. the block is expected to open for operation on october 1." chen weiqiao said.
