fast technology reported on september 17 that intel and amazon web services (aws) today announced a multi-year, multi-billion dollar strategic expansion of their collaboration, under which the two parties will jointly invest in customized chips to support accelerated performance of ai applications.

as part of the expanded collaboration, intel will produce ai architecture chips for aws using the 18a process (the company's most advanced process node, equivalent to 1.8nm).in addition, custom xeon 6 chips will be produced for aws on the intel 3 process.

"the expansion of our long-standing relationship with aws reflects the strength of our process technology and the differentiated solutions we deliver for customer workloads," said intel ceo pat gelsinger.

“intel’s chip design and manufacturing capabilities, combined with aws’s comprehensive and widely adopted cloud, ai, and machine learning services, will unleash innovation in our shared ecosystem, supporting growth of both companies’ businesses and a sustainable domestic ai supply chain.”

18a is the culmination of intel's ambitious "five years, four nodes (5y4n)" roadmap. the process is built on the basis of 20a, which for the first time combines the gate-all-around (gaa) transistor technology ribbonfet with the backside power supply technology powervia.

previously, intel officially announced that the next-generation core processor panther lake and the next-generation xeon processor clearwater forest based on the 18a process have been successfully lit up and entered the operating system

according to intel's vision,18a will be the key node for it to surpass tsmc and regain the world's first place in semiconductor technology

intel revealed that intel 18a is expected to go into production in 2025.
