recently, someone appeared on an online second-hand trading platform to sell wuhan university glazed tiles, with the highest price being 3,650 yuan, which has attracted widespread attention.

is it legal to sell these tiles online? on september 17, jimu news exclusively interviewed the relevant person in charge of the cultural relics protection and management office of wuhan university.

the person in charge introduced that the wuhan university men's dormitory (now yingyuan student dormitory) is a national key cultural relic protection unit, and the tiles on the arcade roof of the dormitory were newly replaced during renovation and maintenance in 2016.

after the extreme freezing rain in wuhan in january and february 2024 and the continuous heavy rain in july, some tiles on the arcade roof of the dormitory became loose and fell off. to ensure safety and eliminate hidden dangers, the school used the summer vacation to carry out routine maintenance and replace some damaged and loose tiles.

in 2016, the early buildings of wuhan university yingding were repaired and maintained (jimu news file photo)

the person in charge especially reminded that according to the relevant laws and regulations on the protection of national cultural relics, tiles that need to be replaced due to repair work will be reused in subsequent cultural relics protection work after sorting and repair, and those that cannot be used will also be kept in a centralized manner. privately selling these tiles violates the relevant provisions of the "cultural relics protection law of the people's republic of china", especially since they have become important materials for the auxiliary components of cultural relics buildings.

the person in charge said that the country's efforts to combat and prevent cultural relics crimes are very strong, and the internet is not a lawless place. the general public is reminded here that cultural relics are living history, embodying the profound civilizational soul of the country and the nation, and are non-renewable and irreplaceable resources of china's excellent civilization. we must respect history, respect culture, cherish cultural relics, pass on civilization, and jointly protect the treasures of civilization, so that the historical buildings that bear the imprint of all wuhan university people can be passed down from generation to generation.
