"wuxiang millet is pure natural and nutritious." in lingtou village, shangsi township, wuxiang county, changzhi city, shanxi province, villager wei baoyu stood among the drooping ears of grain to shoot a video and promote the locally produced millet to netizens.
wuxiang is the former site of the eighth route army headquarters and was lifted out of poverty in 2019. today, wuxiang xiaomi, which once nurtured the eighth route army, is sold to various places with the development of e-commerce, driving the people in the old revolutionary base to increase their income and become rich.
in 2016, wuxiang county launched e-commerce training for rural residents, and wei baoyu, who had just escaped poverty, signed up. "to be honest, i didn't even know how to use a smartphone before the training." now, wei baoyu can earn 70,000 to 80,000 yuan a year by farming, filming and selling goods.
"in the past, millet could only be sold for 3 yuan per pound. now, through e-commerce sales, sales channels have been opened up and prices have also gone up." zhang yutang, secretary of the lingtou village party branch, said that there are more than 20 companies in the village selling millet through e-commerce live broadcasts.
in the shop in lingtou village, packaged millet is neatly placed on the shelf. after the customer places an order, the millet is shipped from here and then sent to all parts of the country through the county-level delivery logistics center.
in the county, there is an "e-commerce post" serving the county's e-commerce - the county-level e-commerce public service center. in the village, the small shop is also an e-commerce village service station, and the shop owner who has received professional e-commerce training becomes the "shop assistant" serving the villagers. so far, wuxiang county has built 182 village-level service stations, and the coverage rate of rural e-commerce services has reached more than 90%.
millet biscuits, millet rice crackers, millet tea... targeting the market demand, local e-commerce merchants have developed many new products, increasing the added value of millet.
at the wuxiang county e-commerce public service center, hao xudong, deputy director of the county's e-commerce office, is analyzing the e-commerce transactions this month. wuxiang county has connected online stores to the "yunshang wuxiang" transaction cloud platform to create an e-commerce aggregation carrier, and adopted the "e-commerce post + industrial base + farmers + village-level waiters" approach to help promote the sale of agricultural products. "for merchants who reach a certain sales volume, we will provide subsidies and rewards." hao xudong said.
in 2023, wuxiang county achieved an e-commerce transaction volume of 350 million yuan, among which the online sales of agricultural products such as wuxiang millet and wuxiang plum and apricot exceeded 100 million yuan. the e-commerce industry directly drove more than 20,000 farmers, with an average increase of more than 5,000 yuan per household.
recently, wei baoyu has been busy learning video production skills to prepare for the autumn harvest live broadcast. in wuxiang, more and more farmers like wei baoyu are using e-commerce to bring agricultural products out of the mountains and expand channels for increasing income.
