many people were awakened by the sound of the wind.
september 16, 7:30 am,typhoon bebejia hit shanghai, china at a strong typhoon level (42m/s, 14-force wind intensity), surpassing typhoon gloria 75 years ago and becoming the strongest typhoon to hit shanghai since 1949.affected by this, strong winds and rains occurred in jiangsu, zhejiang and shanghai.
according to the paper, the water level of the huangpu river continued to rise. as of 12:45 on september 16, the water level at the huangpu park hydrological station was 4.01 meters, and the warning tide level of the huangpu river was 4.55 meters.
"bebejia" breaks the "devil's city boundary"
according to statistics from the tropical cyclone data center of the china meteorological administration, typhoon bebejia is the first strong typhoon to land in shanghai since meteorological records began.
in the past 75 years, typhoons have landed in shanghai nine times, but a closer look at the wind strength when they landed shows that none of these nine typhoons were strong typhoons. among them, four were strong tropical storms, three were tropical storms, and two were typhoons. in the past decade, a total of five typhoons have landed in shanghai, the most recent of which was in 2022, when typhoon "meihua" landed in shanghai at typhoon strength, causing a large number of flights and railways to be suspended.
the typhoon "gloria" that landed in shanghai in 1949 was the strongest typhoon shanghai had ever faced, with wind speeds of up to 30 meters per second when it landed. according to records, "gloria" caused 1,613 deaths in shanghai, 2.083 million acres of farmland were flooded, and 63,208 houses collapsed. according to shangguan news, one-third of the shanty houses had water one to two feet deep, and more than half of the shanty houses had their roofs blown off by the typhoon. about 100,000 to 200,000 refugees fled into the city, and many people were electrocuted to death.
looking at the data of the china meteorological tropical cyclone data center over the past 75 years, typhoons of strong typhoon intensity and above have only landed in guangdong, taiwan, fujian, hainan, zhejiang, and guangxi. among them, taiwan has been hit by 26 strong typhoons and 6 super typhoons. shanghai has never experienced a strong typhoon before. this operation to resist "bebejia" is the first time shanghai has "confronted" a strong typhoon.
why did "bebejia" land in shanghai?
four days ago, typhoon bebejia was not expected to make landfall in shanghai.
according to the forecast of the central meteorological observatory at 14:00 on the 12th, typhoon "bebejia" will land on the coast from zhejiang to northern fujian. at 18:00 on the 15th, the central meteorological observatory again predicted that "bebejia" is most likely to land on the coast from pinghu, zhejiang to pudong, shanghai as a strong typhoon.
why did the path of "bebejia" shift northward? according to shen yuyang, a meteorological analyst at china weather network, the center of "bebejia" was swept into dry cold air on the evening of the 12th, causing its "core convection to be destroyed" and its satellite cloud image to become "like a bald head." at 5:00 on the 13th, the maximum wind force at the center of "bebejia" weakened from level 11 to level 10, making it "more susceptible to the guidance of low-level southerly winds, causing its path to shift northward compared with the previous period."

the weakened "bebejia" moved northwards under the guidance of southerly winds, but it always moved westwards.
under the combined force of the subtropical high pressure and the east china sea, "bebejia" regained its energy source and strengthened again. according to the china weather network on september 14, the eastern part of the east china sea where "bebejia" will pass has a "deep high sea temperature area, with a temperature of 30°c, 2 to 3°c higher than the annual average." on the 15th, after "bebejia" entered the east china sea, its maximum wind force suddenly increased from level 12 to level 14 within 20 hours, developing into a strong typhoon level, and landed in shanghai pudong lingang new city on the 16th.
as of the time of publication, a reporter from the paper photographed the huangpu river overflowing the fence at the bund. china news network reported that more than 1,600 flights were canceled in jiangsu, zhejiang and shanghai due to the typhoon. in the videos posted by netizens on social media, large trees were blown down and the windows of buildings were crumbling... it is inevitable to recall the last typhoon "makar". it has only been 10 days since the super typhoon "makar" landed in china.
"makar" lasted for 56 hours after landing, and the strongest period of wind and rain impact of "bebejia" has not yet ended. the central meteorological observatory issued a typhoon orange warning at 10:00 on september 16. "bebejia" has weakened from a strong typhoon to a typhoon. from 14:00 on september 16 to 14:00 on september 17, there will be strong winds of 6-7 and gusts of 8-9 in the southern yellow sea, western east china sea, northern zhejiang, central and southern jiangsu, and eastern anhui. there will be strong winds of 8-10 and gusts of 11-13 along the coast of shanghai, southeastern coast of jiangsu, and the waters near zhoushan islands. from 14:00 on september 16 to 14:00 on september 17, there will be heavy to torrential rain in parts of central and northern anhui, central and southern jiangsu, northwestern zhejiang, western shanghai, eastern henan and other places. among them, there will be torrential rain (100-160 mm) in parts of eastern anhui and southern jiangsu.
the public is advised to pay close attention to the latest typhoon dynamics, weather forecasts and other warning information released by the meteorological department, and be sure to pay attention to safety, take good protection, or try to reduce going out. drivers should pay attention to flood prevention warning signs and try to stay away from waterlogged areas such as the bottom of slopes and bridge holes.
