from the perspective of industry, the largest number of elderly people are engaged in wholesale and retail industry, which is 1.32 million; followed by those engaged in medical-related industries, which is 1.07 million; and there are 1.04 million people engaged in the service industry.

according to the national institute of population and social security research of japan, by 2040, when the generation born during japan's second baby boom (1971 to 1974) is over 65 years old, the number of elderly people in japan will increase to 39.28 million, and the proportion of the total population will rise to 34.8%.
