on september 9, 2024, the world sustainable standards organization (hereinafter referred to as "wsso") and the chinese academy of environmental sciences (hereinafter referred to as "cases") announced an important strategic cooperation agreement. according to the agreement, the two parties will give full play to their respective advantages, follow the principle of "complementary advantages, mutual benefit, long-term cooperation and common development", strengthen cooperation in the field of sustainable development, jointly promote global environmental protection and climate change response strategies, and promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. wsso global director general wu zheng and cas president li haisheng signed the agreement on behalf of their respective institutions.
wsso was established on december 20, 2023 by the nobel foundation for sustainable development in conjunction with several governments and international organizations. the organization is committed to unifying standards in the fields of sustainable development such as energy, carbon sinks, green finance, ecological and environmental industries, energy conservation and environmental protection, carbon neutrality-related technologies and esg. wsso aims to promote the establishment of a global carbon market in accordance with the provisions of the paris agreement. wsso will be composed of three representatives from china, the united states and the european union to manage daily work and adopt a director-general responsibility system. the first director-general will be dr. wu zheng, one of the first nobel medal winners of sustainable development from china.
the chinese academy of environmental sciences, founded in 1978, is affiliated to the ministry of ecology and environment of the people's republic of china and is a national-level environmental protection research institution. focusing on the national sustainable development strategy, the chinese academy of environmental sciences conducts innovative and fundamental major environmental protection scientific research, is committed to providing strategic, forward-looking and overall scientific and technological support for national economic and social development and environmental decision-making, serves the engineering technology and consulting needs of major environmental issues in economic and social development, and plays an important role in the national sustainable development strategy and environmental protection cause.
2024 is the starting year after the mid-term of the united nations 2030 agenda for sustainable development. the world has entered a new stage of re-examining and accelerating the realization of sustainable development goals. on august 11, 2024, the "opinions on accelerating the comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development" issued by the cpc central committee and the state council was officially released. this is the first time that the central government has made systematic arrangements for accelerating the comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development. the opinions focus on five major areas, namely, building a spatial pattern of green, low-carbon and high-quality development, accelerating the green and low-carbon transformation of industrial structure, steadily promoting the green and low-carbon transformation of energy, promoting the green transformation of transportation, and promoting the green transformation of urban and rural construction and development, as well as three major links, namely, implementing a comprehensive conservation strategy, promoting the green transformation of consumption patterns, and playing the supporting role of scientific and technological innovation. the deployment accelerates the formation of a spatial pattern, industrial structure, production mode, and lifestyle that conserves resources and protects the environment.
the cooperation between wsso and the chinese academy of environmental sciences is timely. in view of the key areas mentioned in the "opinions on accelerating the comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development", the strategic cooperation between the two parties will play a major supporting role in scientific and technological innovation and carry out in-depth cooperation in the two major fields of transportation and green logistics, and green natural resources. the cooperation will include joint research on carbon emissions in the transportation sector, the formulation of accounting standards and methodologies, and the promotion of international recognition and the construction of digital technology platforms; at the same time, it will also study the digitization of green natural resources and explore natural capital, carbon sink accounting and marketization paths.
according to the china petroleum and chemical industry federation, the number of "dual carbon" talents needed in my country during the "14th five-year plan" period will be between 550,000 and 1 million, and batches of green professions will resonate with the "dual carbon" strategy. however, due to the late start of green professions, the green talent training model still needs to be improved in terms of professional standards, industry norms, training certification, and talent evaluation. focusing on this gap in professional talents, the two sides will cooperate to build a joint research platform for sustainable development, use the resources of both sides to carry out policy and standard research, cultivate scientific research talents, and promote the transformation of scientific research results.
li haisheng, president of the chinese academy of environmental sciences, stressed that the signing of the strategic cooperation agreement will help both sides further deepen pragmatic cooperation in the field of sustainable development, innovate the internationalization path of ecological environment standards, and create new momentum and contribute new strength to accelerate the modernization of harmonious coexistence between man and nature. carry out extensive, pragmatic and in-depth cooperation. from the important moment of signing the strategic cooperation agreement, cooperation will reach a new level and reach a new height.
