xinhua news agency, havana, september 12 (reporter li zijian) cuban foreign minister rodriguez said in the capital havana on the 12th that based on the current us dollar price, the united states' decades-long economic, financial blockade and trade embargo on cuba has caused the country to suffer cumulative losses of more than 164.1 billion us dollars.

rodriguez said at a press conference that day that the economic losses caused by the us blockade to cuba amounted to 5.06 billion us dollars from march 1, 2023 to february 29, 2024 alone.

rodriguez stressed that the us blockade is a massive, flagrant and systematic violation of the human rights of the cuban people and a major obstacle to cuba's development. without the blockade, cuba's gdp could have grown by about 8% in 2023.

after the victory of the cuban revolution in 1959, the us government adopted a hostile policy toward cuba. in 1961, the us and cuba broke off diplomatic relations. the following year, the us imposed an economic, financial blockade and trade embargo on cuba. in 2015, the two countries restored diplomatic relations, but the us did not completely lift the blockade against cuba. after the trump administration came to power in 2017, the us tightened its policy toward cuba again. since 2019, the us has continuously escalated its sanctions against cuba.
