on september 6, the zhejiang-produced film "the sinking of the lisbon maru" was released nationwide. the film tells the story of how the japanese army requisitioned the "lisbon maru" passenger and cargo ship to escort more than 1,800 british prisoners of war back to japan from hong kong in october 1942. the ship was hit by the u.s. military when passing through the antarctic waters of zhoushan. 843 british prisoners of war were killed and 384 were rescued by local fishermen in zhoushan at the risk of their lives.

fang li, the director and producer of "the sinking of the lisbon maru", is 70 years old this year. in a public speech before the film was released, he told such a story.
in 2016, fang li's team went to search for the lisbon maru shipwreck. in the first ten days, they found nothing. finally, the team scanned the entire dongji sea area and found a large shipwreck. how can we prove that it is the lisbon maru? in 2017, fang li took the team to verify it again. after the aerial robot flew at ultra-low altitude for detection, it was found that there were thousands of tons of steel under the water. then it continued to survey with very fine sonar and obtained a three-dimensional image, which was exactly the same as the drawing of the lisbon maru. that year, director fang li officially confirmed that the lisbon maru shipwreck was found.
"during the day, i work on technology, deep-sea unmanned robots, aviation and ocean gravity measurement systems; at night, i work on movies, video editing and music production. the greatest meaning of my life lies in the hard work. when you identify one thing, you keep pursuing it. the most important thing i have done in my life is 'the sinking of the lisbon maru.'" in fang li's view, these ten years have not been in vain and are very worthwhile, as he has left all the physical and witness evidence for more than 2,000 families and a piece of history.

how to restore the historical scenes on the big screen? the director team selected photos of 9 people and conducted many different attempts. restore the flat photos into three dimensions, use optical 3d scanning modeling; use the most advanced technology, dynamic scanning, digital model patches; use animation for 3d modeling; use traditional animation methods, hand-drawn frame by frame... in the end, the director team made a bold decision to keep the people still and move the camera. the warships, ships, and sea water in the picture can all move, but the people are fixed, so that all vision, hearing, and feeling can achieve the best effect. during the 7 years of filming, fang li and his crew visited the uk, the us, zhoushan, china and other places, looking for a lot of information and conducting detailed historical research, finding more than 380 survivors and their descendants, and communicating face-to-face with more than 110 of them. previously, the film was screened in the uk, beijing and other places, and received a warm response.
