xinhua news agency, geneva, september 10 (reporter chen binjie zeng yan) the world trade organization 2024 public forum opened in geneva, switzerland on the 10th. the theme of this public forum is "reglobalization: better trade, creating a better world", which will focus on how reglobalization can promote more inclusive trade and ensure that more people benefit from it.
wto director-general ngozi okonjo-iweala said at the forum that the "world trade report 2024" recently released by the wto pointed out that international trade can help narrow the income gap between economies and increase the inclusiveness of the global economy.
iweala said that from 1995 to 2023, global per capita income increased by about 65%, excluding inflation, and the per capita income of middle- and low-income economies nearly tripled. "this is the first time since the industrial revolution that the income gap between rich and poor countries has narrowed."
iweala stressed that trade protectionism cannot effectively enhance inclusiveness, and only more and better trade can enable marginalized people and economies to integrate into the mainstream of the global economy.
wto chief economist ralph osa said that in order to enhance the inclusiveness of trade and further narrow the income gap between economies, a "holistic strategy" should be implemented that combines open trade with supportive domestic policies and effective international cooperation.
the forum will last for four days, during which 138 meetings will be held, attracting nearly 4,400 participants from government, business, academia and all walks of life.
