protesters demand the removal of judge morais

thousands of brazilians took part in an independence day rally on saturday, organized by right-wing opposition members, to protest against supreme court justice alexandre de moraes, who had earlier ordered the banning of elon musk's social media platform x.

the demonstration in sao paulo was held by protesters wearing brazil's yellow and green colors and holding posters calling for the removal of supreme court justice morais, who has sparked controversy for launching a broad crackdown on digital disinformation in brazil.

“i came here today to support freedom of expression. the constitution is being violated,” said mayara ribeira, a 25-year-old radiologist wearing a brazilian soccer jersey. “the judge (morais) should be impeached.”

just a week ago, x was banned in brazil after the company ignored a court order and failed to block certain accounts suspected of spreading false information. many of these accounts belonged to supporters of former far-right president jair bolsonaro. this marked an escalation in a months-long dispute between musk and moraes, who musk had previously accused of censoring social media.

“i don’t want anyone to be silenced, whether they’re left or right,” "i'm glad that musk has brought international attention to what's happening in brazil," said elayne nunes, a 58-year-old retiree who came to the demonstration from the neighboring state of minas gerais.
