it home reported on september 4 that tesla hinted in information submitted to regulators that its self-driving vehicles may be equipped with rotatable seats.

the emergence of autonomous driving technology will bring new possibilities to vehicle design. currently, most autonomous driving cars are based on traditional vehicle design and still retain driving elements such as steering wheels and pedals. once autonomous driving technology no longer requires human drivers to take over, the design of car interiors will have greater freedom.

to ensure safety, regulators are assessing whether and how to regulate it. in australia, regulators asked the industry for comments, and tesla responded.

when asked if there should be “specific requirements regarding seat position when ads (advanced driver assistance systems) are engaged” for vehicles with “higher levels of driving automation” but still retaining “manual driving control,” tesla responded: “no, as this would negatively impact dedicated designs for safety or comfort. for example, when level 4 ads is operating, the system may allow the driver to transition into a passenger position, fully recline the seat and sleep. with respect to seatbelt requirements, we recommend that these requirements apply only when a human driver is in control of the vehicle, unless otherwise explicitly indicated or required by the ads.”

it home noted that in another response, tesla talked about rotatable seats: "as long as appropriate safety measures are implemented, it is conceivable that vehicle designs favor fully reclining or rotating seats, or designs without forward-facing seats, or vehicle designs with only middle seat positions (such as heavy vehicles) can be foreseen."

tesla may just want to limit regulation to ensure that its future plans are not hindered, but it may also hint at tesla's plans for future products. for example, tesla's reference to a "central seat position" for heavy vehicles is clearly a reference to the interior of the already launched tesla semi. therefore, it is not ruled out that we will see similar rotatable lie-flat seats on the tesla robotaxi, which will be released on october 10.
