friends who are familiar with history know that china's table tennis world is full of talented people, and it can even be said that there is an oversupply. therefore, for a long time, some people have gone abroad to develop, including world champions, such as the 61-year-old former main player of the national table tennis team and current luxembourg athlete ni xia lian. some of the information she revealed in a recent interview can also give us a more intuitive understanding of this phenomenon.
according to ni xia lian's disclosure in an interview, after she retired from the national team in the 1980s, her monthly salary was over 100 yuan, which was already very high. however, if she went abroad, the salary could be ten or twenty times higher. this can also explain why so many table tennis talents leave their homeland, which is really touching.
ni xia lian was born in 1963. she was one of the main players of the chinese women's team in the world table tennis championships. she won the gold medal in this event at the age of 19. she also won the mixed doubles championship. she was considered a top-level athlete in the table tennis world at the time.
however, the competition within the national table tennis team was indeed extremely fierce. even a strong player like ni xialian only reached the peak of her career in 1983, but soon began to decline. by the time of the 1985 world table tennis championships, her performance had obviously declined. after that, she was unable to take on the responsibility of the national team and left the field to go to university for further studies. but not long after, foreign associations offered her an olive branch.
regarding the ins and outs of her overseas development, ni xia lian clearly recalled:
"in 1989, the german bayer club invited me to sign a two-year contract. at that time, the salary in china was more than 100 yuan a month, which was already very high, but i could earn 10 or 20 times that abroad. i wanted to make some money and bring a good life to my family. my parents lived a good life in shanghai, but as a daughter, i wanted them to be better."
later, ni xia lian went to luxembourg and eventually stayed there, where she found her own love and family.
obviously, material rewards were the main motivation for ni xialian to leave her hometown. even many years later, the current chinese table tennis "overseas army" athletes and coaches scattered around the country are also like this. how to commercialize and market table tennis is a difficult problem facing the chinese table tennis world.
in the past, people tended to focus only on the results of major competitions such as the olympics and the world table tennis championships, and discussed how to win glory for the country. however, athletes and coaches themselves also have to make a living, and there are only so many places in major competitions. how can others make a living through their own skills?
if the team cannot provide a suitable employment environment, then talent will inevitably leave. especially this year, many chinese table tennis players went to japan and germany to participate in leagues. many fans have also raised questions about this: what about our own league? so what do you think about these issues?
