quantum information science is an interdisciplinary subject between quantum mechanics and informatics. it integrates theories and technologies from multiple disciplines such as quantum mechanics, informatics, and computer science, and aims to explore the application of quantum effects in information processing, computing, communications, and other fields. when it comes to quantum technology, laymen often hesitate and feel that it is out of reach. in fact, this technology is used in navigation equipment and communications.
"when a satellite wants to accurately locate an object, it needs an atomic clock (optical clock) for accurate timekeeping. the working principle of the atomic clock uses the theory of quantum physics, especially the phenomenon of atomic transition to measure time." professor zhong zhirong introduced that in the field of communications, quantum technology also shows its unique advantages. due to the randomness and non-replicability of quantum measurements, it is almost impossible to be deciphered, which ensures the security of quantum communication. at present, under the guidance and drive of the "quantum secure communication 'beijing-shanghai trunk line' technology verification and application demonstration project" deployed by the national development and reform commission and the "mozi" quantum satellite project deployed by the chinese academy of sciences' space science strategic pilot project, my country has mastered the key technologies of quantum communication in urban, inter-city and free space.

in the "2023 undergraduate major registration and approval results of ordinary higher education institutions" announced by the ministry of education in march this year, five universities including fuzhou university have newly established the "quantum information science" major. so far, there are 13 universities in china that offer the "quantum information science" major, including the university of science and technology of china, beijing institute of technology, anhui university, southwest university, yangtze university, hefei university of technology, and fuzhou university.

is it too specialized to offer such a subject at the undergraduate level? in this regard, professor zhong said frankly that the teaching content of the undergraduate quantum information science major has three major directions, namely quantum communication, quantum computing, and quantum measurement. basically, it is at a relatively basic stage, and the truly professional content can only be mastered during the master's and doctoral periods.
fuzhou university also provides strong faculty support for the newly added "high-end" undergraduate majors. professor zheng shibiao, a national outstanding young scientist and yangtze river scholar, is the leader of this discipline at fuzhou university. last year, his research results on "bose-coded error correction to extend the life of quantum bits" were successfully selected as one of the "top ten advances in chinese science" in 2023. fuzhou university maintains an open teaching attitude and encourages undergraduates to participate in scientific research practice. students can apply to join scientific research projects through the fuzhou university srtp project.

the reporter learned that in 2021, the university of science and technology of china became the first university in china to be approved to establish a quantum information science major. in 2024, the first batch of undergraduate students majoring in quantum information science will graduate, and all students will pursue further studies.
professor zhong said that the school hopes that most students can continue their studies and then work in scientific research at domestic and foreign universities and research institutions. he also mentioned that for those students who choose to work, many industries have opened doors for them. "information engineering, computer science, software engineering, biology, medicine, etc. can all be candidates for students to work in."
it is worth mentioning that with the development of science and technology, international technology giants such as google, ibm, microsoft, honeywell, intel and amazon, as well as domestic alibaba, tencent, huawei and baidu, have set up quantum laboratories within their companies.
