according to afp, after musk failed to comply with an order requiring x-platform to appoint legal representatives in papua new guinea, brazilian supreme court judge alexandre de morais issued an order requiring x-platform to suspend its operating services in brazil.
musk then angrily accused de morais of "trying to destroy democracy in brazil." the billionaire wrote on x: "freedom of speech is the cornerstone of democracy, and an unelected pseudo-judge in brazil is undermining democracy for political purposes."
the conflict between the two sides has been going on for months. previously, de morais ordered x to ban a number of accounts that spread false information. these accounts reportedly belonged to supporters of former brazilian president bolsonaro and were suspected of publishing false information about the 2022 brazilian general election. but x did not fully cooperate. in april this year, de morais ordered an investigation into musk, accusing x of reactivating some banned accounts.
earlier this month, musk announced the closure of x's office in brazil and accused de moraes of threatening to arrest x's legal representative in brazil to force it to comply with the "censorship order."
on the 28th local time, de morais signed a subpoena requiring x platform to appoint a new legal representative in brazil within 24 hours, otherwise the platform's services in brazil will be suspended.
on the 29th, starlink, a satellite internet operator owned by musk, said it had received an order from de morais to freeze its accounts in brazil and prohibit it from conducting financial transactions in brazil. starlink said the order was "based on an unfounded decision that starlink should be held responsible for the fine imposed on x."
on the 30th, brazilian president lula also expressed his views on the incident. in an interview with the media, he said that musk should not offend the brazilian authorities and that any investor in brazil is subject to brazilian law.
