xinhua news agency, yaoundé, august 30 (reporter wang ze and ouyang ziying) "chinese kung fu fascinates me and makes me see the infinite possibilities of personal power." cameroonian youth rodrigo taring (chinese name luoge) recently told xinhua news agency reporters in yaoundé about his kung fu "dream-chasing story."
born in bafoussam, a city in western cameroon, rogge loved chinese kung fu movies when he was a child and regarded bruce lee as his idol. "i dreamed that one day i could appear on the movie screen like my idol bruce lee. i was determined to go to china when i grew up."
rogge said that there was no kung fu club in bafoussam. in order to realize his kung fu dream, he went to school in another province. "i was delighted to find that there was a martial arts club there, and i joined without hesitation. at that moment, my dream was very close to me."
on august 2, cameroonian youth rodrigo taring (chinese name luoge) told xinhua reporters about his kung fu "dream-chasing story" in yaoundé. photo by xinhua news agency (photo by copsoe)during his university years, rogge studied and practiced chinese kung fu diligently. after graduation, he moved to yaoundé and founded his own kung fu club, dedicated to cultivating the young generation of martial arts enthusiasts in cameroon. during a training session, the chinese director of the confucius institute at the university of yaoundé ii visited by chance and was deeply moved by their enthusiasm for chinese culture.
rogge said that the exchange sparked his interest in learning more about traditional chinese culture. since then, he has become a frequent visitor to the confucius institute and officially became a confucius institute student in 2010.
a few years later, as one of the most outstanding graduates, rogge received a chinese government scholarship to study in china. after obtaining a master's degree in chinese international education from zhejiang normal university, he continued to pursue his "kung fu dream" and obtained a doctorate in traditional ethnic sports from shanghai university of sport.
during his study in china, the careful guidance of kung fu masters deepened rogge's understanding of traditional chinese culture and martial arts. he believes that kung fu is a cultural symbol that inherits traditional chinese medicine and the concept of physical fitness, and shows the unique charm of chinese culture.
"martial arts is an art of self-cultivation and it teaches us how to control ourselves," said rogge.
now, the 38-year-old rogge is only one step away from realizing his dream. the documentary "kung fu chasing dreams" starring him will soon be released in chinese theaters. the film is produced by the african research institute of zhejiang normal university, and rogge, the executive director of the african film and television center of the african research institute of zhejiang normal university, serves as co-director.
rogge said that he and his team are preparing to shoot other films with similar stories, and are actively looking for investors to find more opportunities for sino-african film cooperation projects. "i can get to where i am today, thanks to the opportunities given by sino-african cooperation," he said. "china can be said to be my second home... the feeling is hard to describe in words, life is beautiful and peaceful."
as a beneficiary of cultural exchanges between africa and china, rogge hopes to become a cultural ambassador to spread china's rich traditional culture to cameroonians and promote cultural exchanges between cameroon and china.
"china is one of cameroon's most important partners. the ever-evolving china-africa cooperation provides more africans with opportunities to access a wider world and creates a better future for the younger generation," said rogge.
