lake said that more than one-third of the emergency funds will be used to support aid operations in yemen and ethiopia to help the people of these two countries cope with difficult challenges such as hunger, disease and climate disasters. other emergency funds will be used to support myanmar, mali, burkina faso, haiti, cameroon, mozambique, burundi and malawi, some of which have been plagued by years of conflict and turmoil, and some have suffered disasters such as drought and floods due to the impact of the el nino phenomenon.

joyce msuya, the un assistant secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and deputy emergency relief coordinator, said the central emergency response fund is a last resort to avoid the worst-case scenario. "we urgently need donors to pay more and sustained attention to the crisis of insufficient aid funding."

the central emergency response fund is managed by the united nations office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs on behalf of the united nations secretary-general. it allocates funds twice a year to help underfunded countries respond to humanitarian emergencies. in february this year, the united nations office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs allocated $100 million to assist chad, the democratic republic of the congo, lebanon and other countries. the total amount of $200 million allocated this year is the lowest in the past three years.
