"what's the point? even if he's found guilty, he still doesn't need to be imprisoned. he can just continue to pretend to be sick, get medical parole, and walk around outside."

the taipei district court earlier ruled that former taiwan leader chen shui-bian was exempt from prosecution for money laundering on the grounds that the statute of limitations had expired, and the taipei prosecutors appealed. on august 28, the taiwan "high court" revoked the exemption ruling and sent chen shui-bian's money laundering case back to the taipei district court for retrial.

on may 20, the taipei district court panel determined that the statute of limitations for chen shui-bian's money laundering case is 10 years, and the statute of limitations is calculated from january 25, 2006. although chen shui-bian was unable to appear in court due to illness during this period, the statute of limitations has expired, and the money laundering case was ruled to be exempt from prosecution.

the taipei prosecutors believed that the taipei district court had miscalculated the statute of limitations, so they were dissatisfied with the verdict and filed an appeal. the taiwan high court ruled on the 28th thatthe original trial held that the statute of limitations for prosecution in this case had expired and therefore issued a waiver of prosecution. the litigation procedure was "difficult to recognize as appropriate," so the judgment was revoked and sent back to the taipei district court for retrial.

chen shui-bian and his wife wu shu-chen were accused of accepting nt$10 million from chen min-xun, the former chairman of taipei 101, to help chen obtain the position of chairman. when the taiwan high court heard the case, it determined that chen shui-bian was wu shu-chen's accomplice in money laundering. after the taipei district prosecutors' office investigated the case, it indicted chen shui-bian for money laundering in 2015.

taiwan's united daily news previously reported that chen shui-bian was also involved in corruption for using government secret expenses. however, the dpp passed the third reading of the revised "accounting law", which exempted the financial responsibility of those involved in government secret expenses before december 31, 2006, and chen shui-bian was sentenced to be exempted from prosecution on july 15, 2022. chen minxun's money laundering case is the second case that chen shui-bian "escaped".

regarding the taiwan "high court" revoking the judgment that chen shui-bian was exempt from prosecution in the money laundering case, some netizens on the island said, "what's the point? even if he is found guilty, he still doesn't need to be imprisoned. he can continue to pretend to be sick, be released on medical parole, and walk around outside."; some people questioned, "it's really a drag..."
