on august 28 local time, ravina shamdasani, spokesperson for the office of the united nations high commissioner for human rights, said in a statement that a major operation taken by israeli security forces in the occupied west bank that day could seriously deepen the already catastrophic situation in the occupied palestinian territories.
shamdasani said that israel's actions in the west bank cities of jenin, tubas and tulkarm killed at least nine palestinians, two of whom were believed to be children. since october 7 last year, israel has caused a total of 637 deaths in the west bank. this is also the highest number of deaths in eight months since the united nations first began recording casualties in the west bank 20 years ago.
shamdasani stressed that israel must abide by its obligations under international law, and that the use of air strikes and other military weapons and tactics by its security forces violates human rights norms and standards applicable to law enforcement operations. alleged unlawful killings must be thoroughly and independently investigated, and those responsible held accountable.
earlier on august 28, local time, the israeli military said that it had launched a large-scale military operation in the northern west bank cities of jenin and tulkarm. later that day, the palestinian health department said that the israeli military's operations in the west bank refugee camps of jenin and tubas had killed 10 people.
