"the small video blocks on this big screen are real-time images of underground coal mining and tunneling." on august 5, when the reporter met yang kaiyuan in the office of the west mine mining area of dawan coal mine of guizhou shuicheng mining co., ltd., he had just returned from working underground in the mine. he told the reporter that he is currently mainly responsible for the production management of the west mine of dawan coal mine, namely the coal mining face construction, mining and withdrawal.
yang kaiyuan was born into a family of miners. in 1999, when the guizhou water and mining group company dawan coal mine was recruiting workers, he applied for the job and was assigned to the first mining area of the mine as a coal miner.
"i was born in a miner's family. my father is a miner, and it was natural for me to become a miner's son. i am destined to have an indissoluble bond with coal mines in this life. i am well aware of the importance of energy security to national development. as long as the mines are with me, i will be there." yang kaiyuan said that under the influence of his father, a coal miner, he entered the coal mining industry and took root in the coal sea, doing this for 25 years.
"i often need to work underground. now i am mainly responsible for the safety production of the west mine of dawan coal mine." yang kaiyuan said that the underground conditions of the coal mine are difficult, the coal mining face is still high-grade general mining, the roof is heavily watered, and the labor intensity is high. in special circumstances, the on-site working time can be as long as 12 hours. many of the workers who entered the mine together could not bear the hardship and changed jobs. some people advised yang kaiyuan to find another way, but he loved his job and insisted on staying.
"during my work, with the care and help of the organization, i joined the party. after joining the party, the sacred power of being willing to fight for the party's cause all my life has always inspired and motivated me to persist in this ordinary job." yang kaiyuan said that after having the honor of joining the party organization, he has since had a clearer understanding of his responsibilities, and his outlook on life and values have been sublimated to another level.

innovation and efficiency are safer
"when i first started working, the coal mining face was general mining, with 60 to 70 people in each shift. the labor intensity was high, and each shift could not produce many tons of coal, so there was no guarantee of safety." yang kaiyuan said that coal mining has now achieved intelligent coal mining faces, with only about 10 people required per shift, full video monitoring of the face, coal mining machines that have achieved repeated memory for cutting coal, automatic follow-up pulling of the support, and remote centralized monitoring in the ground dispatching room. each shift has a large production capacity, and safety is greatly guaranteed, which can effectively improve the overall level of coal mine safety production.
"for mine construction and development, we must take the intelligent road, increase investment in mines, and realize mechanization to reduce manpower and intelligentization to replace manpower." yang kaiyuan said that with the continuous improvement of coal mine production technology, there are more and more mechanical equipment. if you want to be a good coal miner, it is far from enough to rely on the hard work of the past. you must work hard to learn and master the operation technology of advanced equipment. yang kaiyuan thought so and did so.
"in june 2000, the mining area purchased a set of comprehensive mining equipment. looking at this huge machine, i thought about my low level of education and wondered if i could operate it." yang kaiyuan secretly made up his mind: "i must master it!" so he actively signed up for the opportunity to go to wangjiazhai coal mine to learn comprehensive mining technology.
during the study period, he listened carefully, took notes carefully, and humbly asked the old technicians for advice. after returning, he devoted himself to research, continuously accumulated experience, and summed up a set of practical installation techniques for comprehensive mining equipment, namely, first brush the cutting eye - nail the road - transport equipment - install the front and rear slides - and then install the bracket. after this set of installation techniques was applied, the installation progress of the comprehensive mining equipment in the coal area was accelerated, allowing the comprehensive mining in the work area to give full play to the efficiency of mechanized coal mining earlier.
not only that, in his later work, yang kaiyuan also found that the original pipelines were messy and the investment was large during the installation of the comprehensive mining support. in 2012, he began to transform the support pipelines when the coal mining face was withdrawn, merging the inlet and return pipelines of the two supports into one trip, which not only reduced the cost investment and equipment maintenance, but also made the support regular. later, this technology won the "two golds and one creation" special award of the water and mining group. this technology has been promoted and used throughout the company and has been used to this day. as of 2023, it has saved a total of 1.75 million yuan in material costs for the mining area.
in addition, in 2014, yang kaiyuan presided over the renovation project of the tunnel car gates, fixing the car gates to the railway with screws and blocks, which increased the strength of the car gates, reduced labor and material costs, increased the safety factor, and reduced the accident rate.

"in light of my current job responsibilities and the mining layout of the mine, i will now focus on the recovery operations of the current 210905 coal mining face and the recovery of the 211103-2 coal mining face, especially the safety management during the withdrawal of the face; at the same time, we will improve the excavation efficiency of the excavation face to ensure the safe, orderly production and sustainable development of the mine." speaking of work, yang kaiyuan introduced his most important job to reporters.
the conditions on the coal mining front are complex and changeable, and the environment is harsh. everyone says that yang kaiyuan is very strong, and it is normal for him to repair the coal late at night and work overtime on holidays. he goes wherever there is a need and solves problems wherever there is a problem, regardless of day or night, and he will never leave until the work is completed.
workers recalled that in march 2005, the 11104 working face in the mine passed through the old lane. due to aging equipment and soft bottom plate, materials were mainly transported by manpower, making on-site management difficult. yang kaiyuan, who was suffering from kidney stones at the time, put the chinese medicine boiled by his wife into a bottle and brought it to the underground site, personally directing the operation, and worked with illness for more than a month.
in 2011, the 120201 working face of the west wing of the east shaft of dawan coal mine was being installed. due to the special geological conditions, the working face had a supplementary cutting eye, and the scraper conveyor of the working face had to be docked after mining to the supplementary cutting eye. on the day of docking, yang kaiyuan, then the director of the third coal mining area of the mine, stayed underground for 30 hours until the docking work was successfully completed before going up to the surface.
in the da wan mining area, there have been more than 10 similar electromechanical accidents in which faults occurred continuously on the working face and caused serious damage to the electromechanical equipment. however, each time, yang kaiyuan personally arrived at the scene to handle the accident in the shortest time possible, winning more time for production. finally, with the joint efforts of cadres and workers across the district, the working face was successfully mined, creating the best single-output single-advance record of the da wan coal mine.
since july 2011, yang kaiyuan has served as a grassroots management cadre in the first and third mining areas and the west well mining area of dawan coal mine. under his leadership, the annual raw coal output of the areas is more than 650,000 tons. in his work, he is down-to-earth, loyal to his duties, willing to contribute, and hardworking. he has grown from an ordinary coal miner to a production backbone, deputy district chief, and chief district chief, and has realized his life value in an ordinary position with his youth, wisdom and sweat.
