The British military announced on Wednesday the construction of a facility it claims is one of the largest in Europe to prepare its equipment for the risk of interference with Global Positioning System (GPS) signals, AFP reported on August 21.

The anechoic hangar will be the size of an aircraft hangar and will allow testing of drones, Chinook helicopters or F-35 fighter jets without posing a risk to local air traffic, the Defense Department said in a statement.

QinetiQ will build the anechoic library at its Boscombe Down site in southern England between now and 2026 under a £20 million contract.

The Department of Defense explained that the facility can "simulate multiple hostile environments to test how equipment responds to jamming and other threats designed to deceive or disrupt military assets."

"Adversary threats to jam GPS signals to confuse military equipment are becoming more common," the statement quoted State Secretary for Defence and Munitions Maria Eagle as saying.

She added: “This state-of-the-art facility will allow us to eliminate vulnerabilities, protect our national security and better protect our armed forces as they deploy around the world.”
