The Hamad area west of the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Yunis has been subjected to large-scale bombing and artillery fire by the Israeli army in recent days, and a large number of buildings have been destroyed.

When residents tried to return home, they were greeted by destroyed roads, collapsed houses, scattered belongings, and everything had changed.

Heder, a resident of Hamad: There has been a huge destruction here. The things we have fought for all our lives are gone, and the house we dreamed of is gone. We used to live in a rented apartment, which sheltered us from the wind and rain. That was the only happy time in our lives. The Israeli army asked people to evacuate Hamad, and we only brought our children and very few clothes. When we came back today, there was nothing here. There are no apartments, no furniture. We have no home, only destruction. Where should we go? We didn't bring food, water or anything. What can we do? There is no aid, no crossing point, no way to survive, and we are slowly dying. Do you know? I would rather die now than endure the present.

The local civil defense agency said emergency workers found more than a dozen bodies in a residential area and were searching for other missing people in the rubble of Hamad, where most buildings have been destroyed.

Civil defense spokesman Suleiman said: "The damage here is severe and the suffering is profound. Hamad has almost become a disaster area, with nearly 70% of the buildings destroyed. In the absence of heavy machinery, civil defense personnel are still trying their best to search through the wreckage in the hope of finding the bodies of the victims."
