Recently, the Ministry of Civil Affairs has publicly solicited public opinions on the draft "Marriage Registration Regulations (Draft for Comments)", among which new regulations such as the cancellation of household registration books for marriage registration have attracted widespread attention. On August 23, Feng Guilin, a researcher at the Hubei Academy of Social Sciences, said in an interview with @经视直播 reporter that with the widespread use of information technology and big data, household registration books may become antiques and exit the stage of history.

Feng Guilin said that the household register was first used as a symbol of identity, but when the ID card appeared, the role of the household register faded a lot. Now people can show their identity by showing their ID card wherever they go, such as when they are on a business trip or staying in a hotel. Although the household register is still used in house transactions, proof of kinship, and children's schooling, in the long run, with the advent of the information age, especially the realization and widespread use of advanced technologies such as big data, many lengthy and complicated procedures will be reduced, and paper-based office methods such as household registers will be replaced.

It is understood that as early as 2019, the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department launched an electronic certificate for resident household registration books, and generated electronic certificates for household registration books for heads of family households and collective households and each household member who have received resident household registration books issued by Guangdong. The electronic certificate for household registration books can be used to verify the holder, household registration information and the relationship between household members. In 2022, Chongqing Public Security also launched an "electronic household registration book". In addition, it also provides everyone with a variety of personal electronic certificates such as identity cards, driving licenses, and residence permits.
