[Global Times-Global Network reporter Ni Hao Yin Yeping] On the afternoon of August 22, the Ministry of Commerce held a regular press conference. A media outlet asked questions saying that China recently decided to launch an anti-subsidy investigation on imported dairy products originating from the European Union. Is this in retaliation for the European Commission's move to reduce, but not abandon, tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles?

In this regard, He Yadong, spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce, said that this case was initiated at the request of China's domestic industry, which is fundamentally different from the European Commission's rash initiation of an anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese electric vehicles without any application from member states or industry.

He Yadong said that according to relevant Chinese laws and regulations and WTO rules, domestic industries have the right to file trade remedy applications to maintain normal market competition order and their own legitimate rights. After receiving the application, the Ministry of Commerce conducted pre-filing consultations with the EU on subsidies in accordance with legal procedures and reviewed the materials and relevant evidence submitted by the applicant. The Ministry of Commerce believes that the application of domestic industries meets the conditions for filing an anti-subsidy investigation and decides to initiate an investigation.

He Yadong stressed: "The investigation of this case has just been launched. We will conduct the investigation in an open and transparent manner in accordance with relevant Chinese laws and regulations and WTO rules to fully protect the rights of all stakeholders."
