On August 20, local time, Russian President Vladimir Putin flew to Chechnya, met with Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov and inspected the local troops preparing for war. This was Putin's first visit to Chechnya since 2011.

French media released footage of Putin arriving at Grozny Airport on a special plane. After getting off the helicopter, Putin shook hands with Kadyrov and other officials. Putin then put his arm around Kadyrov's shoulders, hugged him, and the two got into a car together.

On August 20, 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov at Grozny Airport in Chechnya.

Putin first visited the grave of Kadyrov's father, Akhmat Kadyrov, the first Chechen president, and laid flowers. In 2004, Akhmat Kadyrov was assassinated by a bomb in a stadium; in 2007, his son Ramzan Kadyrov was appointed as the leader of Chechnya by Putin when he was only 30 years old.

Afterwards, Putin and Kadyrov arrived at the Russian Special Forces University in the eastern Chechen city of Gudermes to observe the training of volunteers who will be deployed in special military operations in Ukraine, and held brief exchanges with the special forces commanders, instructors and volunteers at the base.
