Following the brutal rape and murder of a female intern earlier this month, which sparked public protests and strikes by medical staff in many places, India recently experienced another vicious rape case: two 4-year-old girls were sexually assaulted by a 23-year-old cleaner at school.

According to a report by the Hindustan Times on the 21st, this latest case occurred in a co-educational school in Bhadrapur, Maharashtra, where two 4-year-old girls in preschool were sexually assaulted in the school bathroom. The 23-year-old suspect, Akshay Shinde, was hired by the school on a contract basis on August 1 and was arrested on the 17th.

According to reports from multiple Indian media, the incident came to light after one of the girls complained of pain and told her parents about it. Her parents were extremely shocked and only found out that the other girl might have been sexually assaulted after talking to the parents of the other girl. The parents reported the case on August 16 and the suspect was subsequently arrested.

According to reports, the incident occurred between 9 am and 12 pm on the 13th. One of the victims told her parents that an older man in the school took off her clothes and touched her inappropriately. After the two families took the children for a physical examination, the doctor confirmed that they had been sexually assaulted.

In addition, the girl’s family also expressed dissatisfaction with the police’s attitude, saying that the police only submitted the preliminary investigation report late at night on the 16th "12 hours after receiving the report."
