Li Shida was born in 1550 and died in 1620. His courtesy name was Tongfu and his pseudonym was Yanghuai. He was from Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, and was like a shining star inlaid in the water town of Jiangnan. In the second year of the Wanli reign (1574), he won the first place in the imperial examination with his amazing talent and became a Jinshi. He was not only good at literary and military strategy, but also good at painting, especially in the sketching of figures and the splashing of ink on landscapes. His brushwork was vivid and profound.

He once discussed the five beauties of painting in an exquisite way, using the metaphors of "green" - like ancient trees towering to the sky, weathering the frost but not withering; "elegant" - like cranes flying in the sky, transcending the constraints of the world; "strange" - like the unexpected beauty of winding paths; "distant" - like the vastness of smoke and waves, inspiring endless reverie; "rhyme" - like the sound of a guqin played lightly, lingering in the air for three days. As for the five evils, he used the metaphors of "tender" - like the tender buds of early spring, lacking the precipitation of years; "hard" - like a craftsman carving wood, losing its agility and vitality; "carved" - like a sharp knife carving, hurting the harmony of nature; "raw" - like the first taste of fruit, not yet ripe; "foolish" - like the ravings of a fool, lacking the resonance of the soul.

Li Shida's masterpieces, such as "Pipa in Xunyang", are vivid, with the sound of the pipa like crying and complaining, and the surging river, showing the vicissitudes of life; "Three Camels", three camels stand side by side, with different shapes, with profound meaning, making people laugh and feel the fickleness of the world; "Gathering in the Western Garden" is a grand scene of a banquet and gathering of literati and scholars, with the noble feelings of being indifferent to fame and fortune and devoting themselves to the mountains and rivers flowing in the brush and ink. These works are like shining pearls in the long river of history, allowing future generations to glimpse the elegance and grace of that era.
