On August 20, the well-known data research company Canalys officially released the African smartphone market report for the second quarter of 2024.

The report shows that in the second quarter of the year, the overall shipment of smartphones in Africa was 17.8 million units, a year-on-year increase of 6%. However, this market has become unstable, with different market segments performing completely differently, and even polarized. Some markets have seen a surge, while others have seen a decline.

Now let’s look at the specific ranking and shipment volume of the African market:

Champion: Transsion, with shipments of 9.2 million units and a market share of 51%, a year-on-year increase of 1%;

Runner-up: Samsung, with shipments of 3.3 million units and a market share of 19%, down 25% year-on-year;

Third place: Xiaomi, with shipments of 2.1 million units and a market share of 12%, a year-on-year increase of 45%;

Fourth: Realme, with a shipment volume of 900,000 units and a market share of 5%, a year-on-year increase of 137%;

Fifth: OPPO, with shipments of 800,000 units and a market share of 4%, a year-on-year increase of 39%.

Judging from the overall data, Transsion is still the undisputed king of Africa, and all other brands combined are no match for it. Because its shipments alone exceed 50%, this means that on average, one out of every two smartphones sold in the African market is from Transsion. However, among the top five brands, Transsion's year-on-year growth is the smallest, but Samsung's year-on-year growth has declined by 25%. This shows that Samsung has encountered strong challenges from domestic brands in the African market, and its advantages are gradually disappearing. The report also stated that although Transsion is still the No. 1 brand, it has encountered pressure from a slowing market, which can be seen from the year-on-year data.

The report also specifically commented on Xiaomi, realme, and OPPO. Analysts believe that Xiaomi has achieved the highest market share in the African market in history, which is mainly due to its focus on Nigeria and Egypt, as well as its strategy of adapting to local consumer habits. No wonder Lu Weibing personally went to the African market for research some time ago? It turns out that Xiaomi has a big move in the African market.
