Xinhua News Agency, Geneva, August 20. Chinese Disarmament Ambassador Shen Jian said on the 19th when leading a delegation to attend the 10th Conference of the States Parties to the Arms Trade Treaty that China has always been a firm supporter and loyal practitioner of the Arms Trade Treaty and an active contributor to global arms trade governance.

Shen Jian pointed out in his speech at the general debate that as the only legal instrument regulating the global conventional arms trade under the United Nations framework, the Arms Trade Treaty plays a special role in maintaining world peace and stability and promoting global security governance. China officially joined the treaty in 2020, fully demonstrating China's sincerity and determination to defend the global governance system, support multilateralism, and promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

Shen Jian stressed that China has always taken a prudent and responsible attitude on the issue of arms trade, established a sound policy and regulatory system for arms export, and strictly abided by the three principles of arms export. China opposes "adding fuel to the fire" in conflict areas and opposes politicizing and instrumentalizing the issue of arms trade or the treaty itself.

Shen Jian said that at present, the world is still not peaceful. The scale of global arms trade continues to expand, increasing related spillover risks, and the international community urgently needs to work together to promote governance. Looking forward to the development of the Arms Trade Treaty in the next decade, China proposes: first, adhere to multilateralism and promote common security; second, practice the purpose of the treaty and fulfill national responsibilities; third, strengthen exchanges and cooperation and improve global governance. China is willing to work together with the international community to continuously enhance the authority and vitality of the treaty and make new contributions to achieving common security and lasting peace in the world.

The Arms Trade Treaty came into force in December 2014. So far, there are 115 States Parties and 27 Signatories to the treaty.
