Qualcomm's self-developed Oryon CPU core is about to make its debut on the smartphone market. A leaked datasheet page shows that there will be two models coming soon - SM8750 and SM8750P. The "P" may stand for "Performance", which may be similar to the "AC" variants of Snapdragon chips we have seen before.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 uses a 3nm node (lower than 4nm, which should be TSMC's node again). As shown in the Geekbench test, the CPU part will use a 2+6 configuration, but it is not clear whether it is eight Oryon cores or two Oryon cores plus six Cortex cores.

Unlike the Snapdragon X chips for laptops, the 8th-gen 4 chips must conform to the thermal and power constraints of portable devices. Regardless of configuration, the 4th-gen chips outperformed the 3rd-gen chips by 35% and 30% in single-core and multi-core tests, respectively (these are early Geekbench results, so there may be room for improvement).

The slide also reveals that it will use the new Qualcomm Adreno 8 series graphics processor, which will have improved performance and efficiency over the 7 series. In addition, the chip will also support quad-channel LPDDR5X memory.

The new concept of a "low-power AI" (LPAI) subsystem is very interesting - it's used for constantly running purposes, including audio, camera, and sensor tracking. Of course, there will also be a powerful NPU when the device is active.

In terms of communications, Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will support millimeter wave and sub-6GHz 5G (Rel.17), Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be), Bluetooth 5.4 and UWB (FastConnect 7900).

Several brands are building flagships powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip, but Xiaomi is said to be the first to launch a phone with the new chip. This would be the Mi 15 series, which could debut in October, shortly after the 8 Gen 4 chipset itself (which is officially scheduled to be released in October).
