The 2024 International Geoscience Olympiad (IESO) Global Finals concluded in Beijing a few days ago. In this competition, the Chinese national team consisted of four official members and six guest students. Chen Ziyu from Shanghai Jincai Middle School, Zhong Wen from Suzhou Middle School in Jiangsu Province, Wang Yibo from Zhengzhou Foreign Language New Maple School, and Mao Hanyang from Ningbo Xiaoshi Middle School (East Campus) won all gold medals in the individual competition in this final.
After going through layers of screening to form the national team, the team members received explanations and guidance from scholars of earth sciences at Peking University through online courses and summer courses offered by the School of Earth and Space Sciences of Peking University. It was through such opportunities that everyone was able to gain a more professional understanding of the relevant knowledge of earth sciences.
Chen Ziyu said that this competition was an unforgettable experience. The students not only demonstrated their knowledge and skills, but more importantly, they established friendships with peers from all over the world and shared different cultures and experiences. This will inspire everyone to support and cooperate with each other in future scientific research and work together to create a better future for our home planet.
In his closing speech, Pan Mao, honorary dean of the School of Earth and Space Sciences of Peking University, pointed out that he hopes that students will maintain their enthusiasm for earth science, bravely climb the scientific peaks, contribute their own strength to solving major environmental and resource problems facing mankind, and continue to inject youthful vigor into writing the future chapter of earth science and building a community with a shared future for mankind.
It is understood that the competition is divided into three projects: individual exam, ESP (Earth System Project) and ITFI (International Team Field Trip), and medals and scores are calculated separately for each project. Among them, there are 12 gold medals, 24 silver medals and 41 bronze medals in the individual exam; ESP and ITFI are group projects, and medals are awarded according to the team: ESP has 3 teams winning gold medals (18 items), 3 teams winning silver medals (17 items), and 6 teams winning bronze medals (34 items); ITFI has 3 teams winning gold medals (17 items), 3 teams winning silver medals (17 items), and 6 teams winning bronze medals (34 items).
