At 8:00 on August 19, the sky was gray. In the hematopoietic stem cell collection room on the 15th floor of the inpatient department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force Special Medical Center, the blood cell separator started up, making a low humming sound. Dark red blood flowed out of the collection tube of the donor Kong Genxian's right upper limb vein. After the hematopoietic stem cells were separated by the separator, the remaining components returned to his left upper limb vein through the catheter.
At the same time, a patient with blood disease was preparing for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in a sterile cabin at Peking University People's Hospital.
"As a doctor, I feel very lucky to be a hematopoietic stem cell donor on China's Doctors' Day." Kong Gen, now an infectious disease doctor at Fengtai District Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said with a smile while lying on the collection bed, "This is another way for doctors to fulfill their mission of saving lives and healing the wounded. This holiday is unforgettable!"
In 2021, he donated 8 ml of blood to the China Bone Marrow Bank, filled in the information for the donation, and became a volunteer for the China Bone Marrow Bank. On June 24 this year, he received a call from the China Bone Marrow Bank just after getting off the night shift, informing him that he had successfully matched with an acute leukemia patient and asking him if he was willing to donate hematopoietic stem cells.
As a doctor, he knew the significance of this matter. "The sooner this is implemented, the better it will be for the treatment of patients." After a brief communication with his wife and gaining the support of his family, he replied to the China Bone Marrow Donor Program that day: "I am willing and I will cooperate at any time!"
In the following month, Kong Genxian used his off-get off work time or his colleagues' shifts to squeeze out time to conduct various detailed matching tests. When all the test results met the requirements, he felt sincerely happy: "In the vast sea of people, my bone marrow can save the life of a stranger. What a wonderful fate!"
Since last Thursday, Kong Genxian has been preparing for donation under the arrangement of the China Bone Marrow Donor Program, receiving injections of hematopoietic stem cell mobilization agents every day. "Although the injection of mobilization agents will cause short-term discomfort such as backache and fatigue, it will recover after stopping the injection," he said. "Using my own short-term discomfort to bring others a chance of new life is worth it!"
"Beep!" At around 13:00, the separator issued a crisp prompt sound - the city's 688th non-blood-related hematopoietic stem cell donation was successfully completed.
The staff of China Bone Marrow Donor Program handed over a handwritten letter from a hematopoietic stem cell recipient to Kong Genxian. The letter read, "I am so lucky to have met you. You have given me light and hope. No language in this world can express my gratitude to you."
While reading the letter, Kong Genxian had a gratified smile on his face.
"The recipient is about my age, a man in his 37s or 38s. I am sincerely happy for him and wish him peace and safety from now on." Kong Genxian carefully folded the letter and put it away. He said, "This is the most special Doctor's Day 'gift' I have ever received."
