August 19th is the seventh Chinese Doctors' Day. Recently, the Central Propaganda Department and the National Health Commission publicly released the "Most Beautiful Doctors" of 2024 to the whole society. According to reports, among the "Most Beautiful Doctors" of 2024, some are committed to promoting medical and technological innovation, some are devoted to the cause of women and children's health, some are rooted in rural communities to serve farmers' health, and some are devoted to elderly care... They have practiced the lofty professional spirit of "respecting life, saving the dying and the wounded, being willing to make sacrifices, and loving without boundaries" with practical actions.
"Advocate the humanistic spirit and demonstrate the benevolence of doctors" is the theme of this year's Chinese Doctors' Day, which is eye-catching. When talking about doctors, many people will think of kindness, benevolence, and benevolence, and the word "benevolence" is always indispensable.
Ren means kinship. Whether it is treating others with love or treating others with kinship, without a kind heart, one cannot be a good doctor. Any respectable doctor has both superb medical skills and noble medical ethics, which is called benevolence and benevolence. Sun Simiao, a famous doctor in the Tang Dynasty, said in "On the Sincerity of Great Doctors" that any great doctor who treats patients must first have a heart of great compassion and pity, vowing to save all living beings from suffering, and must not ask about the status of the patient, rich or poor, nor should he look ahead and behind, worrying about good or bad luck. Such a doctor is a benevolent doctor, worthy of the title of a sincere great doctor.
A doctor said: "As long as the patient needs it, no matter how dangerous it is, we must go forward." Indeed, no matter when and where, facing the need, the vast majority of health workers are always fearless, unhesitating, brave, and selfless. For example, they rushed to the front line of epidemic prevention and control without hesitation, racing against time, fighting against the disease, fighting tenaciously, fighting day and night, and showing a spirit of high responsibility to the Party and the people.
Doctors have won praise from the whole society for their efforts in curing illnesses and saving lives, and they also need a good working environment. For example, we must severely crack down on medical-related crimes, especially violent crimes that harm medical staff, in accordance with the law to protect the safety of medical staff. Not long ago, a doctor in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, was attacked during outpatient treatment and unfortunately died. The news was shocking. Injuring doctors not only seriously infringes on the legitimate rights and interests of medical staff, but also disrupts the normal order of medical services and harms the interests of the general public. The whole society must have zero tolerance for any form of injuring doctors. To this end, all localities should improve the hospital safety prevention system and effectively implement security inspection measures to better protect the safety of doctors and patients.
Doctors also need the remuneration they deserve. It is worth mentioning that the "Decision" adopted by the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee has a clear direction for medical reform, which proposes to "deepen the reform of public hospitals oriented towards public welfare, establish a charging mechanism dominated by medical services, improve the salary system, and establish a dynamic adjustment mechanism for establishment. Guide and standardize the development of private hospitals." Further adjustment of the income structure of medical staff is mainly to increase the proportion of fixed income, highlight the public welfare, and let doctors work more at ease and devote more efforts to treating patients and saving lives.
"Heaven, earth and man are the foundation of all things. Heaven creates them, the earth nurtures them, and man completes them." How can we understand "advocating humanistic spirit" more comprehensively? For doctors, we should advocate humanistic spirit; for all localities and departments, we should also advocate humanistic spirit. In other words, the whole society should advocate humanistic spirit. It may be difficult to give a definition of humanistic spirit. But it is clear that a society rich in humanistic spirit must be a people-oriented society, a society that respects human value, cherishes human dignity, and protects human rights.
The famous scholar Yuan Xingpei believes: "Imagine if our doctors only think about bacteria and viruses, but not patients; if our architects only think about cement and steel, but not residents; if our economists only think about GDP, but ignore people's livelihood; if our physicists and chemists only think about molecules, atoms, and electrons, but have not thought about how to use their inventions to benefit mankind, then what is the significance of academic research?" In the final analysis, no matter what profession you are in, you must have a humanistic spirit.
In a society that maintains the humanistic spirit, doctors have dignity, and patients also have dignity, because everyone's rights and interests are protected, and because people are harmonious, friendly, and moving in the same direction. From this perspective, advocating the humanistic spirit requires starting with improving the rule of law, cultivating moral cultivation, and promoting social harmony, and truly putting people in the position of the subject.
"People's health is an important symbol of national prosperity and national strength." When praising doctors, we should not only see that they treat patients and save lives, but also see that they play an important role in building a strong country. Starting from improving institutional arrangements and letting the humanistic spirit warm people's hearts, our society will be more vibrant and hopeful.
