What is rhenium?
Rhenium is a silvery-white heavy metal with the chemical symbol Re and atomic number 75. It belongs to the seventh group of transition metals in the sixth period of the periodic table. It was discovered in 1925 and was the last stable element to be discovered. Its English name Rhenium is derived from the Latin Rhenus, meaning "Rhine River". There is a rather romantic story behind this name.
It is one of the rarest elements in the earth's crust. According to a report released by the United States Geological Survey, the proven reserves of rhenium in the earth's crust are only about 2,500 tons. It is one of the metals with the highest melting points of all elements, second only to tungsten and carbon, and one of the densest substances, second only to platinum, iridium and osmium. At the same time, it also has the highest boiling point of all stable elements.
Mendeleev first predicted the existence of an undiscovered element at this position in the periodic table, calling it "submanganese", and believed that this element must be an analog of manganese. In 1914, British physicist Henry Moseley determined some information about "element 75" through atomic number calculations.
