The second Qinghai-Tibet scientific expedition was launched on August 19, 2017. More than 2,600 scientific expedition teams and more than 28,000 scientific expedition personnel were organized to carry out scientific expeditions covering the entire Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

At the results release conference, Yao Tandong, the leader of the second Qinghai-Tibet scientific expedition team and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced the ten landmark advances on behalf of the expedition team. They include:

Explain the systematic and particular nature of ecological protection on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and provide scientific support for legislation on ecological protection on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau throughout the entire process;

Clarify the characteristics and impacts of the imbalance of Asia's water towers under the influence of climate change, and use science and technology to support water resources and water security strategies;

Clarify the carbon sink function and changing characteristics of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau under the influence of climate change, and use science and technology to respond to climate change and serve the dual carbon goals;

Analyze the changes in the ecosystem and biodiversity of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and optimize the construction of the national ecological security barrier system;

Conduct research on the uplift process and environmental evolution of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and assess the current status and prospects of mineral resources in the national strategic resource reserve base;

Reveal the temporal and spatial laws and disaster mechanisms of natural disasters on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and ensure the safety of major project construction and operation and maintenance;
