Is Google in trouble for launching an AI phone before Apple?

In recent days, bloggers have been posting the review agreement for Team Pixel, Google’s “influence program”. It states,Bloggers participating in the program are "expected to use a Google Pixel device instead of any competing device," and "if another brand's device is found to be superior to the Pixel, we will be forced to terminate the partnership between the brand and the creator."

These terms quickly caused confusion on the Internet and affected many big Vs and technology media. In response, Google's public relations manager Kayla Geier immediately stated that Team Pixel is an independent program, separate from Google's news and creator review programs. The goal of this project is to put the product in the hands of Internet content creators, not news media or technology commentators.

Geier said:The new wording used in the Team Pixel form did seem a bit off and has now been removed.

In the early hours of last Wednesday morning Beijing time, Google officially released the Pixel 9 series of mobile phones, as well as new hardware products such as smart watches and headphones at a new product launch conference. As the most popular product, the Pixel 9 series of mobile phones are equipped with advanced cameras, improved performance, and deeply integrated artificial intelligence technology. At the same time, Google also announced that the Gemini AI assistant will be integrated into the Android system, which means that Android devices will have new AI functions assisted by Gemini, becoming the first mobile operating system equipped with a large multi-modal large model built into large devices.

The Pixel 9 series of phones include the Pixel 9, 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL phones, as well as a premium folding model called the 9 Pro Fold. The Pixel 9 is a basic model with a 6.3-inch display and starts at $799 (about RMB 5,717), which is $100 higher than the previous generation. The Pixel 9 Pro starts at $999, the Pixel 9 Pro XL starts at $1,099, and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold starts at $1,799. In addition, Google also released two sizes of Pixel Watch3 and Pixel Buds Pro2. A Google spokesperson said that the Pixel 9 and the Pixel 9 Pro XL, which are equipped with additional features such as better cameras, will start shipping in late August, while the foldable Pixel 9 Pro Fold will ship in September.

According to Google, the Pixel 9 series of phones will change the way users use smartphones. Equipped with the Gemini AI assistant, the Pixel 9 series of phones will enable users to interact with their phones through chatting and get help with daily tasks.

At present, global technology giants such as Apple, Samsung, and Google are all working hard on AI phones. At the Apple WWDC conference held in June this year, Apple released the artificial intelligence system Apple Intelligence, which puts generative AI models into devices such as iPhone, iPad, and Mac, igniting everyone's imagination and expectations for Apple's AI phones.

According to technology journalist Mark Gurman, the iPhone 16 series, which will be released in September this year, may adopt a relatively conservative strategy in terms of appearance design and functions. There will be no obvious difference from existing models, and no major new features will be added. Gurman also expects that the biggest marketing point of iPhone 16 will be Apple intelligence, and all iPhone 16 models will run Apple Intelligence. With Google taking the lead in releasing a new generation of AI mobile phones, pressure is also placed on Apple, which is about to release new products.
