Artists in AustraliaMonica LohanMonica Rohan (1990-)’s paintings balance ethereal otherworldliness with grounded realism. Inspired by her childhood in rural southeast Queensland and the inner yearnings of 19th-century novels, she reflects on the autobiographical genre through an enigmatic form of self-portrait.

Rohan allows her imagination to run wild, representing a variety of emotional roles and physical states. She uses space as a compelling pictorial device, placing her female subjects in adventurous situations, endlessly floating or falling, climbing or lying, hunting or hiding.

In these carefully composed works, we can see Lohan's sensitivity to her surroundings, her love of pattern, light and color. The pigments retain their clear texture, and the decorative potential of textiles and lush foliage becomes ready-made symbols of the daylight world. Nevertheless, there is still something intriguing in her works, which at first glance appear innocent and whimsical: on closer inspection, loneliness and human fragility seem to cast a shadow over the protagonist's contemplative languor.

Since graduating with honours from the Queensland College of Art in 2011, Rohan’s work has attracted widespread attention. She has been a finalist for several major awards, including the Archibald Prize (2020 and 2016), the Dobell Painting Prize (2019), the Sunshine Coast Art Prize (2018) and the Sulman Prize (2017). In 2015, Rohan’s work was included in Goma Q, a major survey of Queensland artists at the Queensland Art Gallery (QAGOMA).

Her work is held in numerous private and public collections including Art Bank, Queensland University Art Museum, QAGOMA, Brisbane Museum, Rockhampton Art Museum, Tweed Regional Gallery and Griffith University Art Museum.
