Hurricane Ernesto causes widespread power outages on Bermuda

Hurricane Ernesto made landfall in the Bermuda Islands in the North Atlantic on the 17th, causing heavy rains and widespread power outages. After wreaking havoc on the island for a day, it continued to move northeast and left Bermuda that evening.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said that "Ernesto" made landfall in Bermuda as a Category 1 hurricane at around 5:30 a.m. local time on the 17th, with the maximum sustained wind speed reaching 137 kilometers per hour that evening.

According to multiple media reports, strong winds caused local trees to fall and power lines to be damaged, and floods caused by heavy rains flooded the streets. Local buses and ferries have been suspended, and the airport will be closed until the 18th. However, according to government estimates, the hurricane did not cause major casualties or property losses.

Bermuda consists of 181 islands with a total population of about 64,000. The hurricane caused widespread power outages on the island. The local power supplier, Berco, said that as of the evening of the 17th, more than 23,000 users had not yet had their power restored.

The National Hurricane Center of the United States previously warned that Bermuda could experience strong winds and storm surges, and coastal areas could experience severe flooding. The total rainfall in the area is expected to reach 170 to 225 mm, which may cause "life-threatening" floods, especially in low-lying areas on the island.
