On August 18, local time, representatives of the House of Representatives of the Thai Parliament read out the King's decree to Petunthan Shinawatra.Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn officially approved Petunthan as the new Prime Minister of Thailand。
On August 16, the lower house of the Thai parliament held a meeting to vote on the candidate for prime minister. Pheu Thai Party leader Petunthan Shinawatra won the support of more than half of the members of the lower house and was elected as the new prime minister.
The youngest prime minister in Thailand's history
Born in 1986, 37 years old, Petunthan is the daughter of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and the current leader of the Pheu Thai Party. After being elected, Petunthan became the second female prime minister in Thai history after Yingluck Shinawatra, and also the youngest prime minister.
Public information shows that Petthorntan graduated from the Department of Political Science at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, obtained a master's degree from the University of Surrey in the UK, and then joined the family business. In October 2023, Petthorntan was elected as the new leader of the Pheu Thai Party.
The election of Petunthan made her the third prime minister in the Shinawatra family after her father Thaksin and her aunt Yingluck Shinawatra. If Thaksin's brother-in-law Somchai is included, she would be the fourth prime minister.
