AFP cited data from the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature, reporting that 3,807 locations in the Netherlands have registered cases of bluetongue, an increase of nearly 1,000 from the last report on the 12th of this month. A month ago, only about 100 locations in the country reported cases of bluetongue.
The current round of bluetongue in the Netherlands began in September 2023, when cases of bluetongue were first discovered on four farms in North Holland and Utrecht. The last round of bluetongue in the Netherlands occurred in 2009.
Bluetongue is an animal infectious disease caused by the bluetongue virus. The bluetongue virus is transmitted by blood-sucking insects such as Aedes mosquitoes, and mainly causes the disease in ruminants such as sheep and cattle. Symptoms of bluetongue include high fever, mucosal edema and ulcers, etc. At present, the bluetongue virus has not been found to be contagious to humans.
According to AFP, after the current round of bluetongue outbreak began in the Netherlands, the disease has spread to many European countries including Belgium, Germany, Britain, France, etc. In recent weeks, the number of infected animals has increased sharply.
German officials said on the 13th of this month that Germany has recorded 1,885 cases of bluetongue so far this year, compared with only 23 cases in the whole of last year.
Data released by the animal epidemic monitoring platform ESA on the 13th showed that Belgium found 515 cases of bluetongue disease between June 1 and August 11.
The World Organization for Animal Health released a report on the 12th saying that since August, cases of bluetongue disease have been found in France, Luxembourg and Denmark.
France has launched vaccination work this week in an effort to better control the epidemic.
