According to AFP on the 17th, a senior Hamas official refuted US President Biden’s claim that he was "close to reaching a ceasefire agreement" on the same day, calling it a "fantasy."

"It is an illusion to say that we are close to an agreement," Hamas political bureau member Sami Abu Zuhri said in a statement. "What we are facing is not an agreement or real negotiations, but an imperative imposed by the United States," the statement added.

A new round of ceasefire negotiations in the Gaza Strip was held in Doha, the capital of Qatar, on the 15th. Representatives from Qatar, Egypt, the United States and Israel attended the talks, but Hamas was absent.

On the 16th local time, Biden said that a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza war has never been so close after Washington tried to bridge the differences between Israel and Hamas at the Doha talks, "We are closer (to reaching an agreement) than ever before."

On the 16th local time, Biden commented on the Gaza ceasefire negotiations at the White House.

Hamas said on the 16th that Israel has put forward more new conditions in an attempt to disrupt the negotiation process, and Hamas will not accept the new conditions put forward by Israel.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to Israel this weekend to promote the latest ceasefire proposal, the State Department said.

According to Newsweek, a senior Hamas official said the White House's description of the Gaza ceasefire talks was too positive in order to ease regional tensions before the upcoming US presidential election. Washington's strategy is rooted in two separate but simultaneous goals: "The first is to cool down the regional front; the second is that they need a ceasefire agreement for internal reasons related to the election."
