(Reporter Tan Qixin from People's Daily Health Client) On August 15, local time, the World Health Organization called for an increase in vaccine production in view of the severe shortage of cholera vaccines worldwide. Currently, the number of confirmed cases continues to increase and there is a shortage of vaccines, and the global risk of cholera is "very high."

Cholera is characterized by rapid onset, rapid spread and wide range of impact. It is one of the international quarantine infectious diseases stipulated in the International Health Regulations and one of the Class A infectious diseases stipulated in the Law of the People's Republic of China on the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases.

"The overall supply and demand of cholera vaccines in my country will not be greatly affected, and the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention has a series of monitoring systems that can monitor the occurrence of cholera in a timely manner. Even if a local outbreak occurs, it can be responded to in the first time." On August 17, Professor Lu Jiahai, Dean of the Tongyi Health Research Institute of Wenzhou Medical University, told a reporter from the People's Daily Health Client.

According to the data from the national statutory infectious disease reporting and death statistics released by the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention over the years, the reporter found that from January to June this year, the number of cholera cases reported nationwide was 0. Previously, from 2020 to 2023, the number of cholera cases nationwide was 11, 15, 31, and 29, respectively. None of them formed sustained transmission, and the number of deaths was 0.

From the perspective of cholera vaccine demand, Chen Xi, chief physician of the Zigong Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Sichuan Province, told the People's Daily Health Client that there is no need to worry about the risk of a large-scale cholera epidemic in China. Several cholera epidemics in recent years have occurred in countries with poor sanitary conditions. Cholera is a gastrointestinal infectious disease, and pathogens can only enter the human body through contaminated food and water. Therefore, as long as you insist on drinking boiled water and eating cooked food, there is no risk of a large-scale cholera epidemic.InfectRisk, and our country has achieved remarkable results both in sanitary conditions and health education.

"Based on this, our country has not adopted a universal cholera vaccination prevention and control strategy. We only recommend vaccination for people who will travel and work in cholera-endemic areas, including overseas tourists and overseas workers. The total number of people who need vaccination is not large. Our country has its own cholera vaccine production and can be completely self-sufficient." Chen Xi said.

From the vaccine supply side, the reporter checked the information of the National Medical Products Administration and found that the cholera vaccine currently approved in China is the recombinant B subunit/bacterial cholera vaccine (enteric-coated capsules) produced by Shanghai United Cell Biological Co., Ltd. According to the batch release information disclosed by Shanghai United Cell Biological, the number of cholera vaccine batches released in my country showed an increasing trend year by year from 2021 to 2023, which were 31 batches, 45 batches, and 97 batches respectively.
