Reference News reported on August 17According to a report on the Spanish newspaper ABC on August 16, BYD's car roll-on/roll-off carrier "Pioneer 1" has arrived at the Port of Santander in Spain. The ship can carry 7,000 cars and was delivered on January 10 this year. It is part of BYD's plan to enter the European market.
The company plans to put seven more such ships into service in the coming months, the report said. The strategy of using its own ro-ro ships to transport cars is unprecedented in the automotive industry. According to the brand itself, its strategy to offer competitively priced car products is to adopt a vertically integrated model. This has prompted the company to plan to build its own shipping force to avoid relying on multinational shipping companies.
Since entering the Spanish market in March 2023, BYD has become one of the country's top-selling plug-in hybrid car brands. From January to July 2024, the company's sales growth was very impressive, increasing nearly 10 times. The brand has registered more than 1,400 new cars in Spain this year.
After the arrival of the Trailblazer 1 in Spain, experts expect these figures to improve significantly in the coming months and further close the gap with Tesla.
