According to CCTV News, on August 16 local time, the American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) announced that the US presidential election debate will be held on September 10 at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, hosted by the station. Harris and Trump have both promised to attend. It is reported that this is the first duel between Harris and Trump after Biden withdrew from the campaign.
In May of this year, Biden and Trump both agreed to hold a second debate on September 10 after the first debate. However, Biden, who performed poorly in the first debate, was later pressured by many Democrats and announced his withdrawal from the race three weeks after the first debate and supported Harris to succeed him as the Democratic presidential candidate.
After Biden dropped out of the race, Trump said he would withdraw from the September 10 debate and proposed a debate with Harris on Fox TV on September 4, but was rejected by Harris' campaign team. Trump's campaign team later said that Trump agreed to participate in the debate and proposed two more debates.
On August 8, local time, at a United Auto Workers (UAW) event in Detroit, Michigan, Harris expressed her willingness to debate with Trump. She told the media present: "I am happy to discuss further debate plans, or certainly hold a debate after September 10."
Citing two people familiar with Trump's schedule, the media reported that Trump has begun preparing for his first debate with Harris and invited former Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard to Trump's private club and residence, Mar-a-Lago, to help Trump prepare. Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt confirmed the news in an email.
Gabbard participated in the Democratic primary in 2019, but withdrew from the Democratic Party after losing, and has since reshaped herself as a Trump supporter. Gabbard has maintained a friendly relationship with Trump for a long time and was once considered a strong candidate for Trump's running mate. Some analysts believe that Gabbard was invited to participate in Trump's debate preparations in part because she had strongly criticized Harris in the primary debate.
According to a report by Reference News on August 15, citing AFP, Harris' campaign team said on August 15 that it had reached an agreement with Trump's campaign team that the two US presidential candidates would hold two debates before the election. Harris's public relations director Michael Taylor said in a statement: "The debate about the debate is over." He said that in addition to the debate scheduled for September 10, the two teams also agreed to hold a debate between the candidates in October. However, Trump's campaign team has not yet confirmed the news.
