"Forging Ships All My Life Towards the Deep Blue: A Biography of Pan Jingfu" by Wang Yanming and Yu Jing

my country has made amazing achievements in the design and construction of large surface ships, and the development of guided missile destroyers has attracted worldwide attention. This great achievement has surprised the Chinese people and shocked strategic opponents with my country's maritime deterrence and the spirit of self-reliance and self-improvement in science and technology.
Half a century ago, my country did not have a single guided missile destroyer designed and built independently. However, our ancestors worked hard and finally achieved an achievement that the whole world could not believe after half a century of hardships. When trying to explore how this miraculous achievement was achieved, we found that Pan Jingfu's name appeared in many documents.Pan Jingfu, a famous ship design expert, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and one of the founders of missile destroyer development and design, pioneered the independent design and construction of missile destroyers in my country. He worked tirelessly, overcame difficulties, and was determined to innovate. He made continuous breakthroughs in technology and continued to innovate in management, and finally blazed a trail for the Chinese to independently design and build missile destroyers.
Pan Jingfu made important contributions to the design and construction of two generations of four types of guided missile destroyers. In 1978, Pan Jingfu won the National Science Conference Award for developing the first generation of missile destroyers; in 1988, she won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award for the modernization modification of Type 051Z; in 1992, she won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award for the overall design of Type 051G missile destroyer; in 1995, she was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; in 1998, she was awarded the title of "Science and Technology Expert with Outstanding Contributions" by the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense; in 1999, she won the special prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award for the development of Type 052 missile destroyer; in 2001, she won the Technical Science Award of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation for her achievements in the design and construction of domestic missile destroyers.
Pan Jingfu loved reading since he was young and had a strong interest in learning cultural knowledge. Although he had to travel to many places to study due to the turbulent times, he still studied hard and achieved excellent results. After experiencing the brutality of the invaders, he strengthened his belief in saving the country through science and technology, and finally entered the Department of Electrical Engineering of Zhejiang University to concentrate on studying in order to realize his dream.
This book records Pan Jingfu's growth from a small boat hiding from the war during the Anti-Japanese War to later boarding China's first generation missile destroyer designed by herself, restoring Pan Jingfu's great life dedicated to the destroyer cause of the motherland.
On January 20, 1930, Zhuang Yufen gave birth to her first son. The whole family was overjoyed and fired cannons to welcome the newborn. Grandpa Zhuang Youxian was overjoyed and immediately named the child "Jing Fu". The author once consulted a scholar who was very knowledgeable about ancient Chinese culture about the word "Jing Fu". He said that although the word "Jing Fu" comes from the idiom "人镜芙蓉", it also has another meaning. In ancient my country, people believed that the hibiscus mirror had the function of identifying and blocking evil spirits. "Jing Fu" also means not to be confused by evil spirits, to be as calm as a mirror, and to have smooth sailing.
Four years of college life passed in a flash. In the late summer of 1952, Pan Jingfu and her classmates were about to finish their college studies and go to their respective jobs. Before the unified assignment, the school and the electrical engineering department party organization gathered the graduating class of young league members to carry out an outing to the riverside to watch the Qiantang River tide. They were in their prime and secretly made up their minds to resolutely obey the organization's assignment and make careers and contributions in their respective positions like the Qiantang River tide.
Pan Jingfu's assignment was announced in early September 1952. He was assigned to the Electrical Industry Administration Bureau of the East China Ministry of Industry in Shanghai (abbreviated as East China Electrical Bureau). At that time, more than ten other students from the Department of Electrical Engineering were assigned to the same institution. Shortly after the assignment was announced, Pan Jingfu, the secretary of the Youth League branch of the class, was designated as the person in charge and led more than ten students from Hangzhou to Shanghai to report, and together they joined the cause of building the motherland with great enthusiasm.

Pan Jingfu has been engaged in ship design and development for more than 40 years, from participating in the transfer and imitation of the base minesweeper in 1955, to being responsible for the design and development of the first generation of Type 051 domestic missile destroyers in 1967, to being the chief designer of the new generation of Type 052 destroyers in 1984, and retiring to the second line in 1997. He not only created a powerful weapon for a great country, witnessed the People's Navy from weak to strong, from "yellow water" to "deep blue", and gave my country the confidence to have equal dialogue with the world's military powers, but also laid the ideological foundation, engineering technology foundation, management foundation and military industrial foundation for my country to independently design world-class large surface ships.
Pan Jingfu has devoted herself to the design and development of my country's large surface ships for more than 40 years. She has been responsible for the design and development of two generations and four types of domestic missile destroyers. Through hard work and exploration, she has achieved a series of fruitful results and major awards.
Before the mid-1960s, my country had never had experience in designing and building large surface ships of more than 1,000 tons. In 1970, the first ship of the first generation of Type 051 destroyers was launched, which completely changed the history of China's failure to independently design and build large ships. In 1980, the Type 051Z destroyer was launched, and then realized ocean escort and led a team to visit, allowing the People's Navy to go abroad and have the combat capability to break through the first island chain. In 1988, the Type 051G destroyer was successfully launched, and my country's independently designed destroyers achieved a qualitative leap. The shipborne combat system took shape, making it possible to design and build larger displacement and more modern destroyers. In 1993, the new generation of Type 052 destroyers was launched. This is a modern warship with comprehensive air, anti-ship and anti-submarine combat capabilities. It allows the design and construction of my country's large surface ships to be fully in line with the world's advanced level in terms of concepts, technology, ecology and other aspects, and realizes the leapfrog development of domestic warships in design and construction. The Type 052 destroyer's successful intercontinental voyage around the Pacific has made the People's Navy a true "blue water" navy, and it is therefore revered as "China's No. 1 Ship."
Over 40 years have passed in the blink of an eye. These achievements were made by the hard work and exploration of scientific and technological personnel trained by Pan Jingfu. While promoting the People's Navy to the "deep blue", Pan Jingfu also left fruitful results in the design and construction of China's large surface ships.
