evaluate
Black Myth: Wukong surprised me. Right from the start, I knew not to expect it to be a Souls-like game, even though it seems to have many of the hallmarks of the genre. Game Science, the game's Chinese developer, has always insisted that it's not a Souls-like game, preferring to define it as a generic action-RPG. This is at least partially accurate, as Black Myth: Wukong is definitely not a Souls-like game. What I didn't expect was that it was basically one long boss battle. Usually one boss battle is followed by another, and it's in these complex battles that Black Myth: Wukong shines. However, the content between battles isn't that strong, and sometimes it falls into aimless tedium. But its satisfying combat and unique and varied boss battles mostly overcome these shortcomings.
Black Myth: Wukong is an uneven game with more highlights than lows. Its brilliant boss fights and fast-paced combat make up for the dull moments in the middle, and the bland level design and sparse enemies will have you eager for the next showdown with deadly monsters. I appreciate that it's not just another Souls-like imitation game in a now crowded genre, and the choice to have a series of boss battles is unexpected and, frankly, very refreshing. It's disappointing that it lacks outside of the cinematic clashes with powerful bosses, but designing so many exciting boss fights while avoiding fatigue is no easy task and deserves praise.
