[Global Network Report] According to AFP, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Borrell posted on social media on the 16th that he would propose sanctions against some Israeli government officials because they "incited" settlers to violence. The day before, a village in the West Bank was violently attacked by extreme Israeli settlers.

“The Israeli government must immediately cease these unacceptable actions,” Borrell posted on X. “I confirm my intention to propose a motion for the EU to impose sanctions on those who incite settler violence, including some members of the Israeli government.”

AFP said any such sanctions would need to be approved by the 27 EU member states, which are divided over the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

At the same time, reports said that the German Foreign Ministry, the French Foreign Minister, the United Nations and others all condemned the Israeli settlers' attack on villages in the West Bank on the 16th. Germany and France denounced the move as "unacceptable."

According to a previous report by The New York Times, dozens of Israeli settlers broke into the northern West Bank village of Gite on August 15, setting fire to houses and vehicles. The riots quickly drew "rare and swift" condemnation from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and some Israeli officials. The Israeli Prime Minister's Office issued a statement saying that Netanyahu "attaches great importance to the riots that took place in Gite tonight (15th), including Israelis breaking into the village and causing damage to life and property." The statement vowed to find and prosecute those responsible for "any criminal acts."
